Let the people decide on Cha-Cha in a plebiscite -- Chiz

Opposition Senator Chiz Escudero yesterday proposed that the people should decide in a plebiscite or a referendum whether or not to amend the 1987 Constitution.

"The Filipino people have much to gain or lose if the present Constitution is amended. We should not second guess them. Let them settle the issue once and for all," said Escudero, who is chair of the Senate committee on constitutional amendments and revision of codes and law.

"This way, any move for Charter Change will have their approval. To save on money, we can even have it as a rider in the 2010 elections," he said.

Escudero said any effort under the Arroyo administration to change the constitution will be fruitless because it will only be rejected by the people.

He also said the politicians should take the backseat but lend full support in the fight against the administration's efforts to amend the charter through a constituent assembly.

"If I have to march out of the Senate to be with the people in the streets, I will do so. But let the people take the lead in rejecting Cha-Cha now," the 39-year old lawyer-senator said.
