Chiz bucks abolition of Sangguniang Kabataan (SK)

MAKE IT A VEHICLE FOR CHANGE IN COMMUNITIES

Opposition Sen. Chiz Escudero yesterday opposed the abolition of the Sangguniang Kabataan (SK) proposing instead to amend its charter s it can be more effective in being the voice of the youth not only in local governance but also in national affairs

"The SK was established to so the youth can make it a vehicle for participation in development efforts, particularly in their communities." he said.

"We must however make sure that the SK is insulated from dark side of partisan politics. while they learn how best to serve the people in public office," said Escudero, who is chair of the Senate committee on constitutional amendments, and revision of codes and laws.

He said that abolition of the SK, as proposed by some quarters, is not the solution to the meddling of politicians in the youth body since its creation in 1991 under Republic Act 7160, or the Local Government Code.

The SK is composed of youth representatives from each barangay. Only the SK chairman is elected by the voters in the barangay and serves as ex-officio member the barangay council. He has the same powers and responsibilities as a barangay council member.

Its mission is to lead in the prioritization and direction of all development programs for the youth, harness their potential and encourage their active participation in nation-building.

Escudero said abolition of the SK will shut the door to the youth's meaningful participation in their communities.

"Let us not open more doors for the involvement of the youth in local and national affairs. The future, after all, is for them to shape. The SK is one tool for change they can make use of in building this nation ," he said.
