GMA TO INAUGURATE BRIDGES IN NEGROS

President Gloria Macapagal Arroyo will inaugurate two bridges in Negros Occidental when she visits the province on Friday, October 16, 2009.

Completed under the government's pump-priming program are the Binalbagan (Bagacay) Bridge in Hinigaran and Guintubhan (Bagroy) Bridge in Binalbagan, Negros Occidental.

Upon the instruction of Secretary Hermogenes E. Ebdane Jr., Undersecretary for Visayas Operation Rafael C. Yabut, and Region 6 Director Rolando Asis, the DPWH Negros Occidental Second Engineering District Office under District Engineer Leah Delfinado fast-track the implementation of these bridges to provide immediate benefit to people and motorists especially sugarcane haulers since the area around is a sugarcane plantation.

The Binalbagan or Bagacay Bridge along Hinigaran-Isabela Road, is a pre-stressed concrete girder bridge which was completed last July 25, 2009. The bridge has a total length of 90 lineal meters, 7.32 meter wide and is composed of three (3) spans.

Constructed at a cost of P54.128 million, Bagacay Bridge construction was implemented in two (2) phases with the initial phase started as early as CY 2000.  The new bridge structure provides a river crossing for commuters especially heavy trucks hauling sugarcane to milling plants in the area.

On the otherhand, the P52.361 million worth Guintubhan Bridge along Binalbagan–Isabela Road has a total length of 70 meters, 7.32 meters wide and is  composed of two (2) spans.  Similar to Bagacay Bridge which is pre-stressed concrete girder type, Guintubhan Bridge was constructed in six (6) phases beginning in the year 2000 until its completion last September 2009.

The completion of these permanent bridges is a contribution of the PGMA administration and the DPWH to the development of Negros Occidental, the sugar industry capital of the Philippines.
