Statement of Foreign Affairs Secretary Albert F. Del Rosario, on the March 11 Earthquake and Tsunami in Japan

The Government and people of the Republic of the Philippines conveys its deepest condolences to the Government and people of Japan over the heartrending loss of life and unfathomable damage and destruction inflicted by the massive earthquake of 11 March and its resulting tsunamis.
The Philippines stands in firm solidarity with Japan during these difficult times, confident that the indomitable spirit and resilience of the Japanese nation will ultimately prevail over this catastrophe. Being close friends and neighbours, the Philippines and Japan have had a long history of unwavering mutual support and of swiftly heeding each other's calls for assistance in the wake of great natural calamities. Within this same spirit, President Benigno S. Aquino III had immediately conveyed to the Government of Japan the Philippines' readiness to extend any assistance within its capability, in the ongoing emergency response and search-and-rescue efforts.
Japan is home to a sizeable number of Filipinos, whose welfare the Government considers its paramount concern. The Government and our Diplomatic and Consular officials are working closely with authorities at all levels in Japan, to ascertain the condition of Filipino nationals in the affected areas, respond to their needs, and ensure their welfare and safety.
