MANILA—THERE are interviews that are informative, exchanges that allow you to really connect with a stranger. There are interviews that enrich you, when you learn from someone else's experience, or when a new field of knowledge has suddenly been opened to you because of a short conversation.
However, nothing prepares any writer for that rare moment when a person reveals one's spirit, and you just suddenly sense it—the determination and hope that makes one carry on, the faith in dreams that might fall short or perish, the spirit that has nearly shriveled at times in the acid test of poverty, and yet endures, and inspires, and every day is more powerful because it endures.
